Hawthorne Stingrays Swim Team

All neighborhood children aged 4-18 (with the ability to keep their head above the water by themselves) are welcome to join the team regardless of how well they swim.  This is an awesome way for children to develop excellent swimming skills and for families in the community to develop friendships.  Registration is usually in late April/early May and is announced in the Hawthorne Happenings newsletter.

Private swim lessons are available, for a fee, and are posted at the pool by participating instructors.

If you would like more information contact our current TSA Representatives Derek Speerschneider  or Kathryn Banks or you can find their phone numbers listed in the Hawthorne Directory.

General Team Information

The Stingrays are part of the Tarheel Swimming Association (TSA - http://www.tsanc.org/) and all neighborhood kids from age 4 - 18 are eligible, no matter their skill level.  If you are new to the neighborhood or have never considered joining in the past we would like to encourage you to join the team this summer.  This is a great opportunity to meet new friends and get involved in the neighborhood for both parents and kids alike.

If you are unsure if this is right for your swimmer, we will have a one week trial period during the first week of practice starting Tuesday May 26th for them to try it out. Practices will be from 5:30 - 6:00 for 6 and under and 6:00 - 7:00 for ages 7 - 18.

Meets will begin on Tuesday June 16th and will be every Tuesday for the next 6 weeks. The TSA Championship Meet is a fun meet that will include all teams from Wake County this year and has been split into two days. Hawthorne will be participating on Saturday July 25th. More information will be provided at our parent meeting at the beginning of the season but please make sure this event gets on your calendar as well as the Tuesday night meets!

Coaches

We are, however, excited to announce to hiring of three new coaches this year; Coleman Stewart, Danny Erlenmeyer and Alexa Garbarino.

Coach Coleman is a freshman at NC State where he is a member of the NC State swim team. Coleman qualified for Olympic Trials as a senior in high school and came home with all-ACC and honorable mention All American honors this year as a freshman.

Coach Danny is also a freshman swimmer at NC State. Like Coleman he also came in as an Olympic trials qualifier. He is also a high school champion in the 500 free and YMCA national champion and record holder. This year at NC State, Danny came finished the season
as an honorable mention all-ACC.

Alexa is a long time resident of Hawthorne and began her swimming career on the Stingrays where she broke and holds many of the teams records. Alexa also had a very decorative swimming career while swimming for local year-round teams WAVE and YOTA.

All three coaches bring a high level of experience in swimming that will help swimmers of all ages learn the basics and improve on the skills they already have.
